The book

Still Yourself.

How to Come Back to a Body and Mind That Won't Switch Off.

Jac is writing it now. It's the treatment room in book form: what she says to a woman on the table, written down so you can read it at 11pm, when there's nobody there to say it.

What it's about

Grief, and the body that carried on anyway.

It's a book about grief, and about what happens to a woman who keeps functioning through it.

School run, work, dinner, admin. Nobody watching would spot a thing.

The body keeps its own record anyway. The shoulders, the jaw, the breath that never quite finishes.

Jac writes it the way she works: hands on, plain, nothing you need a glossary for.

The title may still change. The list hears everything first.

Where it's heading

The shape of it so far.

Ten chapters planned, eight of them below. It's still being written, so this will move.

  • The Woman Who Can't Switch OffThe 11pm thought. Wired and tired at the same time. Looking fine, and not being fine.
  • Your Nervous System Reacts FirstWhy the body answers before the thought arrives, and why willpower was never going to fix off.
  • What Coping CostsThe evenings lost to the phone. The habit of holding it together, and the bill that comes later.
  • The Body on the TableWhat actually happens in ninety minutes. Stillness as something done to you, not something you force.
  • The Breath You've Been SkippingFunctional breathing, and how the way you breathe has been keeping you switched on without you noticing.
  • Grief Is a Body EventGrief held in the shoulders and the jaw, not only the mind. Why it doesn't move on a schedule.
  • Stillness Is Not NothingRest as its own practice. Not a reward for finishing everything else first.
  • Coming Back to YourselfNot fixed, not cured. Back in touch with the woman underneath the coping.
